Community Service Initiative

Community Service is a form of service learning. Service learning is basically using curriculum to help foster a sense of care and concern among us for the community and the world at large. This can be village, an orphanage or a distant dying species. In the process of recognizing and taking steps to meet the needs of others, we will enhance our creative, critical and reflective skills. More importantly this module will help develop our personal and social responsibility. We will learn through participating in a service experience and have the opportunity to use our skills and knowledge in real-life situations. We will be exposed to community needs and experience caring for another person and learn about the resources available to people for revitalizing their communities. Finally, we will have the opportunity to develop basic knowledge and skills in community service strategies, tactics, and techniques, including the art of volunteerism.

MODULE OBJECTIVES

This subject is especially designed :

1) To inculcate a sense of social responsibility in the students.

2) To promote the culture of caring and respect towards all members of society.

3) To understand the community around them.

4) To understand themselves in relation to their community

In this project, we have to work as a group for the community to meet the needs of the people there. The selected venue is located at Ulu Melaka Orang Asli Village, Serendah, Selangor.

The goal of civil society is to ensure that people are helped to lead better lives. Therefore, we are going to volunteer and work as a meaningful way to bring about change to build strong communities by cultivating an ethic of sharing, helping + caring.

PHASE 1

For my group, which is Group 2, we are going to paint and clean of the outlying area around reading space compound such as external wall, drain and staircase. During 22th of April, we were having our short discussion for around 1 hour in class and Leon, our group leader assigned us the different task.

For my part, I was assigned to clean the compound and the drain.

During the next day which is 23th of April, we had our short meet up for around 30 mins to take our group photo at Block E Level .

MEETING 1

On 26th April 2019, we were having our first meeting and also presentation from 12pm to around 3pm which is almost 3 hours meeting at E5.04.

After the presentation, we had realized that our color scheme and design for the exterior wall were not suitable. We spent around 1 hour in the discussion of choosing the color scheme and also the design of the exterior wall. Finally, we make our decision. We have chosen a brighter color scheme instead of neutral or warm color as brighter color scheme is more suitable for the children. After all the discussions, we have selected yellow, blue and grey as our color scheme.

REFLECTION

Throughout this project, Community Service is an important activity every person should embrace as they are growing up.  Doing community service, a person will find themselves and be exposed to the lifestyles of other people, which also tends to make the volunteer more aware of the needs of the less fortunate.  Volunteering also contributes to the result of more teenagers being more grateful for everything they have and thus they give more.  After this project,  I wish I had done more community service than i had done and I regret not following through with the opportunities I was given.

I enjoyed doing community service and it is the first time I was exposed to needy children.  Though my community service lacked of hours and effort, I do admit that I could do better next time. I expect to be a teacher's aide at here and continue learning about my faith by sharing my ideas with other religious members of the community and helping to teach the young peopl.  In addition, I will be more open-minded when it comes to opportunities for community service and do my best with following through with what I set my mind to. All I can say is it is really fun and great experience of doing this community service with my uni friends.
